The Eastern and central region potato fair - Enhancing technologies in Kenyan Potato value chains

As part of its efforts to transform the Potato Industry, the National Potato Council of Kenya (NPCK) in partnership with the County Government of Nyeri organized for the Eastern and Central region Potato Fair under the theme Enhancing technologies in Potato value chains for food security and agribusiness, at Wambugu Farm Agricultural Training center in Nyeri County.

The event, held on February 16th 2018, brought together different actors in the potato value chain, which included seed potato producers, Input providers, Fertilizer Companies, organic farming, Finance, value addition and soil testing companies.

Grow Africa supports the NPCK in partnership with the Alliance for Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) to implementing various initiatives that helps address the challenges in the potato Sub-sector. Some of the initiatives include direct linkage of potato farmer groups with market outlets and supporting the farmers to participate in networking and information exchange forums such as National potato Conference and County Trade Fairs.

The fair was attended by over 1000 farmers and was aimed at increasing awareness and sharing knowledge on innovations and technologies in developing agribusinesses, increasing availability of high quality inputs and improving productivity, which is expected to lead to transformation of the potato subsector. The fair was also important for stakeholders networking and creating awareness about the ongoing industrial’s activities and initiatives.

As part of its efforts to transform the Kenyan potato industry, the NPCK has established forums for information sharing, showcasing technologies, and innovations and for business-to-business interactions. These initiatives are aimed at increasing awareness and sharing knowledge on innovations and technologies in developing agribusinesses, increasing availability of high quality inputs and improving productivity, which lead to transformation of the potato subsector.
